SLS SME will provide a lightning 101 presentation where performance of lightning protection system technology and gadgets will be presented. Damage to facilities, lawsuits, technologies used in different industries will be presented, and pros and cons will be outlined. Lastly, best lightning protection practices will be presented and summarized.

About Dr. Carlos T. Mata

Dr. Mata is currently the Chief Technology Officer at SLS. Dr. Mata and his team have helped multiple commercial space companies with their lightning needs, including Orbital ATK, Northrup Grumman, Lockheed Martin Space, SpaceX, and Blue Origin, among others. Dr. Mata was awarded the “NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest honor
NASA awards to anyone who was not a government employee when the service was performed.
The award is granted only to individuals whose distinguished accomplishments contributed substantially to the NASA mission. The contribution must be so extraordinary that other forms of recognition would be inadequate.” Dr. Mata has been responsible for the design and implementation of the most complex lightning protection and lightning instrumentation systems, including the design of lightning protection systems and lightning instrumentation systems for LC-39B, LC-36, LC-46, and currently LC-48, at the Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral Space Force Station.
